When you strum a note on a guitar, or produce a note on any instrument,
a vibration is produced. The vibration is composed of a fundamental
frequency and harmonics. The fundamental frequency determines which note
is produced. The harmonics are multiples of the fundamental frequency so
that the fundamental frequency and the harmonics are equally spaced. The
fundamental frequency and each harmonic may have different amplitudes.
Some may be attenuated so much that they have negligible amplitude but
they will still be perceived as being part of the same note. The amplitudes
determine timbre and give each instrument its unique sound.
